Our Stories | Airlifting a skipper to safety in Mallorca

With severe weather affecting the south of Mallorca, a complex maritime rescue operation unfolded on the evening of Wednesday 11th February.

At 18:45, a distress call was received from a passenger aboard a small vessel stranded approximately 60–70 metres from the shoreline near the breakwater. While worsening conditions – swells of up to 1.5 metres and winds of 17–20 knots – led the skipper to report engine failure and an escalating level of risk. A nearby harbour vessel attempted to tow the boat clear, but deteriorating sea conditions made the effort increasingly dangerous. With time critical and the vessel drifting ever closer to the rocky coastline, our aerial rescue response was activated.

As said by Co Pilot João do Amaral Prata: “It was a mission with a high degree of complexity” with a strong swell having pushed the craft dangerously close to nearby rocks. A number of factors made this mission particularly challenging—from the proximity to Palma Airport and the coastline to rough sea conditions and the constant risk that the boat’s anchor might give way.

Our rescuer, Joaquín Acedo, was deployed into the water, positioning himself alongside the stricken vessel to secure the skipper for extraction. From above, hoist operator Jorge Hurtado managed the winch operation, while Co Pilot João and Commander Francisco Moranta maintained a stable hover and full situational awareness aboard the Helimer 203. On-duty mechanics Javier Ramos and Gonzalo Coll ensured the aircraft remained fully mission-ready throughout.

The Guardamar coastal rescue boat also played a vital role, maintaining a safety perimeter and supporting the aerial team as they worked against wind and swell. Despite these challenges, a carefully executed hoist brought the skipper safely into the helicopter, and he was flown ashore unharmed. Reflecting on the mission, João noted, “At the end, it was clear how relieved the rescued man was. He was deeply afraid for his life and expressed heartfelt thanks to the crew for their work.”

This mission underscores the importance of seamless coordination between air and maritime rescue teams, particularly in adverse weather. In challenging sea states such as these, success depends on preparation, precision and trust — ensuring that even in the harshest conditions, help can reach those in need.
